The story behind Titebond began in Columbus, Ohio, in 1935, when the Franklin Glue Company introduced the first ready-to-use liquid hide glue for furniture manufacturing. Unlike traditional hide glues, which required heating and mixing, the new adhesive could be applied at room temperature and helped make wood bonding faster and more practical.
In 1951, Franklin developed the first water-based aliphatic resin wood glue. This innovation led to the creation of the Titebond brand, which quickly became a preferred adhesive among furniture manufacturers and professional woodworkers. The original Titebond formula helped establish aliphatic resin glue as an industry standard for furniture, cabinetry and general woodworking.
Titebond continued to develop new adhesive technologies as woodworking requirements evolved. In 1991, Franklin launched Titebond II Premium Wood Glue, the first readily available one-part wood glue to pass the ANSI/HPVA Type II water-resistance specification. This provided woodworkers with an easy-to-use adhesive suitable for both interior work and many exterior woodworking projects.
In 2004, Titebond introduced Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue. It was the first one-part wood glue to pass the more demanding ANSI/HPVA Type I water-resistance specification, creating a new category of waterproof, water-clean-up adhesive for exterior woodworking.

Titebond II Premium is a water-resistant wood glue designed for interior and exterior woodworking. It passes the ANSI/HPVA Type II water-resistance specification and is suitable for outdoor furniture, planters, bird boxes, picnic tables and projects exposed to occasional moisture. It also provides strong initial tack, a fast set and excellent sandability.
Titebond III Ultimate is a premium waterproof wood glue for demanding interior and exterior applications. It passes the ANSI/HPVA Type I water-resistance specification and offers superior bond strength, a longer open assembly time and a lower minimum application temperature. It is also compliant with US FDA requirements for indirect food contact, making it suitable for wooden chopping boards and other kitchen projects.

interior, water-resistant and waterproof wood glues for furniture
making, joinery, cabinetry, repairs and outdoor timber projects.

Titebond III Ultimate passes the ANSI/HPVA Type I water-resistance
specification and is classified as a waterproof wood glue.
Titebond II Premium and Titebond II Extend pass the ANSI/HPVA Type II
specification and are water-resistant. Titebond Original is intended
primarily for interior woodworking.
These products should not be used for continuous immersion,
below-waterline applications or structural load-bearing bonds.
Titebond II Premium, Titebond II Extend and Titebond III Ultimate can
be used for suitable exterior woodworking projects. Typical
applications include garden furniture, planters, bird boxes, picnic
tables and outdoor timber repairs.

Titebond wood glues can bond many porous wood-based materials,
including hardwood, softwood, MDF, plywood, particleboard and

For the strongest results, ensure the surfaces are clean, dry and
close fitting before applying the adhesive.
The cured glue-line colour varies between products. Titebond Original
and Titebond II generally produce a yellow or translucent bond line,
while other formulas may cure to a darker colour.
Remove excess adhesive before it cures where the glue line will
remain visible.
Yes. Titebond wood glues are designed to sand cleanly once fully
cured. Removing excess adhesive while it is still wet will make
finishing easier and help prevent visible adhesive patches.
Titebond wood glue is unaffected by most wood finishes once cured.
However, dried adhesive left on the timber surface can prevent stain
from penetrating evenly.
Remove wet squeeze-out with a damp cloth or scrape and sand cured
residue before applying paint, stain, oil or varnish.
