PUR Glue: How to Choose PUR Hot Melt for Stronger, Heat-Resistant Edgebanding

PUR glue explained: how reactive polyurethane hot melt works, when it beats EVA, and which Jowatherm or Aro-Bond PUR adhesive suits your edgebanding line.

Revison Date: October 2026

PUR glue is a reactive polyurethane hot melt adhesive that is applied hot, grabs as it cools and then cures with moisture into a tough, heat-resistant and water-resistant bond. It is the go-to choice for premium edgebanding, kitchen and bathroom furniture and any panel work where a standard EVA hot melt might creep, soften or let moisture in. For most UK furniture and joinery manufacturers, the best all-round option is Jowatherm-Reaktant® MR 607.90 PUR Hotmelt, with unfilled grades for near-invisible joints.

This guide explains what PUR glue is, how it differs from EVA and polyolefin hot melts, which Ureka product suits your edgebander, and how to run PUR adhesive cleanly without blocked nozzles or wasted adhesive.

Quick Answer

The best PUR glue for most edgebanding lines is Jowatherm-Reaktant® MR 607.90, a monomer-reduced PUR hot melt for ABS, PP, PVC, veneer and resinated paper edges. Choose an unfilled PUR glue such as Jowatherm-Reaktant® MR 608.90 or Jowatherm® 608.00 when you need a thin, barely visible glue line on gloss or dark decors, and flush your machine with Jowat® 930.94 PUR Cleaner during standstills.

Application Best Ureka choice Why
Standard edgebanding on throughfeed lines Jowatherm-Reaktant® MR 607.90 Monomer-reduced PUR for ABS, PP, PVC, veneer and resinated paper edges

What Is PUR Glue?

PUR stands for polyurethane reactive. A PUR adhesive is supplied as a solid – granulate, slugs, blocks or cartridges – and is melted in a dedicated hot melt unit. Like any hot melt, it builds grab as it cools, so panels can move on down the line straight away. Unlike a standard hot melt, the adhesive then reacts with moisture in the air and in the substrates and crosslinks into a thermoset polymer.

That second stage is what makes PUR glue different. Once cured, it will not simply melt again when the panel gets hot, which is why PUR hot melt is specified for kitchens, bathrooms, laboratories, healthcare furniture and anything near ovens, dishwashers or steam.

How PUR hot melt cures

Curing happens in two steps:

  • Physical setting: the molten adhesive cools and solidifies within seconds, giving the initial (green) strength needed to trim, scrape and stack.
  • Chemical crosslinking: isocyanate groups react with moisture over the following days. Jowat states that crosslinking of Jowatherm-Reaktant® 607.40 takes place within a few days depending on humidity and material moisture, and the Aro-Bond® 737 technical data sheet gives a curing time of approximately 3 days.

Where PUR glue is used

  • Edgebanding ABS, PP, PVC, HPL, veneer, solid wood and resinated paper edges onto chipboard and MDF panels
  • Kitchen, bathroom and bedroom furniture where heat and humidity are constant
  • Worktop edging, shopfitting and contract furniture with high durability demands
  • Profile wrapping and industrial assembly where a fast-grabbing but durable bond is needed
  • Bonding difficult or low surface energy materials, where Aro-Bond® 737 is designed to give excellent adhesion

PUR glue vs PU glue for wood

People searching for “PUR glue for wood” sometimes mean the one-part polyurethane wood glues used in joinery workshops. Those are moisture-curing liquids or gels applied at room temperature, not hot melts. If you are gluing joints, laminating timber or bonding exterior joinery by hand, read our guide to PU glue pros, cons and best uses and consider Cascapur Fast Cure D4 Waterproof PU Gel. PUR glue, in the trade sense, is a machine-applied hot melt.

Why Adhesive Choice Matters

Edgebanding looks simple, but the edge is the first part of a panel to be knocked, wiped, steamed and heated. The wrong adhesive shows up quickly as warranty claims and rework.

  • Edge lift and delamination: EVA hot melts soften again when heated. Near a dishwasher, oven or sunny window, the edge can creep and lift.
  • Moisture ingress: a weak or porous glue line lets water reach the chipboard core, which swells and breaks the bond. A crosslinked PUR adhesive line is far more water-resistant.
  • Visible glue lines: thick or coloured glue lines spoil gloss, dark and white fronts. Unfilled PUR glue can be run much thinner for an almost invisible joint.
  • Weak bonds on plastic edges: PP and some ABS edges need the right adhesive and primer combination; poor wetting leads to edges that peel off by hand.
  • Machine downtime: PUR left in a melt unit cures solid. Without a proper flushing routine, nozzles, hoses and glue pots block, which is expensive to strip and clean.
  • Poor finish: squeeze-out that is not controlled with release agents and buffing leaves smears and stress whitening on the edge radius.

If you are already seeing these problems, our adhesive audit service can review your line, adhesive and settings.

Best Adhesive for PUR Edgebanding

Jowatherm-Reaktant® MR 607.90 PUR Hotmelt – best all-round PUR glue

Jowatherm-Reaktant® MR 607.90 is an edgebanding adhesive for bonding standard edgebands – ABS, PP, PVC, veneer and resinated paper – on throughfeed lines. It is a monomer-reduced (MR) PUR: the Jowat safety data sheet lists its diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) content below 0.1%, and the product is not classified with hazard pictograms. That makes it easier to handle on the shop floor than standard PUR grades. Learn more in what are low monomer adhesives?

Choose it when: you want one PUR glue for most edge materials, better workplace handling and PUR-level heat and water resistance. Available as 600g tins of granulate and 2.5kg slugs.

How to Choose the Right Adhesive

PUR glue is not always the right answer. EVA and polyolefin hot melts still have a place, and the choice depends on the finished product, your machine and your volumes. Our guide to the best type of hotmelt adhesive covers the basics; the table below compares them for edgebanding.

Adhesive type Heat resistance Water resistance Glue line Machine handling Example
EVA hot melt Moderate – softens again when heated Moderate Thicker, often filled Easiest; no curing in the unit Jowatherm® 280.58
Polyolefin (PO) hot melt Higher than EVA Good Medium Processed like a conventional hot melt Jowat Toptherm® 237.10
PUR hot melt (filled) High after crosslinking High Thin to medium Needs moisture-free melting and flushing Jowatherm® 607.40
PUR hot melt (unfilled) High after crosslinking High Thinnest, near invisible Needs moisture-free melting and flushing Jowatherm® MR 608.90

Substrates and edge materials

All the Jowatherm PUR grades above cover the common edge materials. For PP edges and unusual plastics, confirm the edge is primed for hot melt and run a peel test. For panels, see our notes on particle board adhesive and HPL laminate adhesive.

Factory vs on-site use

PUR glue is a factory product. It needs a closed, moisture-protected melt system, controlled temperatures and a cleaning routine. For on-site repairs or one-off edging, a contact adhesive or standard hot melt adhesive is usually more practical.

Water resistance and heat resistance

If the finished furniture will see steam, wet cleaning or heat – kitchens, bathrooms, healthcare and commercial washrooms – PUR glue is the safer specification. For dry bedroom or office furniture, a quality EVA or PO may be enough.

Cure speed and handling

PUR gives fast grab for trimming and stacking, but full strength develops over days. Plan stacking, packing and any heat or water testing around that.

Equipment

Check your edgebander can run PUR. Many machines use a dedicated PUR pre-melter or cartridge system. The Aro-Bond® 737 data sheet advises using it only through machines designed for reactive polyurethane hot melts and checking compatibility with the machine manufacturer.

Common Problems and Best Fixes

PUR glue curing in the glue pot or nozzle

PUR reacts with moisture, so leaving it hot in an open or idle unit causes skinning, rising viscosity and blockages.

Best fix: flush the unit with Jowat® 930.94 PUR Cleaner (processing temperature 130–150°C) or Aro-Bond® 791 PUR Cleaner before long standstills, then flush the cleaner out completely before restarting.

Edges lifting near heat

Usually caused by EVA hot melt on furniture that sees heat, or PUR that has not crosslinked because of very dry conditions or a short cure.

Best fix: switch to a PUR hot melt such as Jowatherm-Reaktant® MR 607.90 and allow several days of crosslinking before heat testing.

Visible glue line

Too much adhesive, a filled grade on a gloss front, or poor pressure-roller set-up.

Best fix: an unfilled PUR glue such as Jowatherm-Reaktant® MR 608.90 or Jowatherm® 608.00, with reduced application weight.

Squeeze-out and residue on the panel

Excess adhesive sticks to the panel surface and is hard to remove once cured.

Best fix: spray Riepe LPZ/11 Release Agent onto the upper and lower edge areas before pre-milling, and use Riepe LP163/93 Cleaning Agent with a Riepe NFLY Fabric Buffing Wheel to finish the edge.

Weak bond on plastic edges

With PUR glue, unprimed edges, cold panels or contaminated surfaces stop the adhesive wetting out.

Best fix: condition panels and edges to workshop temperature (Aro-Bond® 737 needs room and material temperatures above 15°C), confirm the edge primer, and run a peel test after cure.

Confusing PUR with PU wood glue

Buying a hot melt for hand-gluing joints, or a liquid PU for an edgebander, wastes time and money.

Best fix: PUR hot melt for machines; polyurethane adhesive such as Cascapur for joinery and assembly.

Best Practice

Follow these 7 proven tips to get the most from your PUR glue:

  1. Store it dry. PUR glue is moisture curing and supplied in moisture-proof packaging. Aro-Bond® 737 should be stored at 5–30°C in its original containers, giving a 12-month storage life. Only open what you will use.
  2. Prepare surfaces. Edges and panels must be smooth, clean and free from dust. Condition materials to workshop temperature.
  3. Set the right temperature. Follow the product data sheet and the machine manufacturer – for example, 140–160°C for Aro-Bond® 737. Avoid overheating, which shortens pot life.
  4. Control coverage. Apply the minimum adhesive that gives full wetting. Unfilled PUR glue lets you run thinner glue lines.
  5. Use correct pressure. Set pressure rollers so the edge is pressed evenly along its full length without squeezing out excess.
  6. Allow full cure before testing. PUR crosslinks over a few days. Test heat, water and peel strength after cure, not straight off the line.
  7. Flush and record. Flush with PUR cleaner before weekends and shutdowns, and keep a cleaning log. See our guide on how to clean your edgebanding machine.

Always read the safety data sheet. Standard PUR grades contain MDI and are restricted to professional users; monomer-reduced grades such as Jowatherm-Reaktant® MR 607.90 reduce that exposure.

For most UK edgebanding lines, the right PUR glue is Jowatherm-Reaktant® MR 607.90: a monomer-reduced PUR hot melt that bonds ABS, PP, PVC, veneer and paper edges with heat and water resistance that EVA cannot match. For high-gloss and dark fronts, step up to the unfilled Jowatherm-Reaktant® MR 608.90 or Jowatherm® 608.00. For wider industrial bonding, use Aro-Bond® 737.

Whichever PUR adhesive you run, protect your machine with Jowat® 930.94 PUR Cleaner. If you are moving from EVA to PUR, read wood adhesive types explained, book adhesive training for your team, or contact us to arrange a trial.

FAQs

What is PUR glue?

PUR glue is a reactive polyurethane hot melt. It is melted and applied like a hot melt, then crosslinks with moisture into a heat-resistant, water-resistant bond that will not soften again in normal use.

What does PUR stand for?

PUR stands for polyurethane reactive. The “reactive” part refers to the moisture-curing chemistry that takes place after the adhesive has cooled.

How long does PUR glue take to cure?

It gives handling strength as soon as it cools, but full crosslinking takes a few days depending on humidity and material moisture. Aro-Bond® 737 quotes approximately 3 days.

Is PUR adhesive waterproof?

Once cured, PUR glue is highly water-resistant and moisture-resistant, which is why it is used for kitchen and bathroom furniture. Always test your finished panel to the standard your customer requires.

Is PUR glue better than EVA hot melt?

For heat, steam and water resistance, yes. EVA is easier to run and fine for dry furniture, but it softens when heated. PUR is the better choice for kitchens, bathrooms and premium furniture.

Can I use PUR glue for wood?

Yes, PUR hot melt bonds wood veneer and solid wood edges on an edgebander. For hand-applied joinery and assembly, use a liquid or gel PU wood glue such as Cascapur instead.

Can I run PUR in my EVA edgebander?

Only if the machine is designed or converted for reactive polyurethane hot melts. Check with your machine manufacturer before switching.

How do I clean PUR out of my machine?

Flush the unit with a dedicated PUR cleaner such as Jowat® 930.94 or Aro-Bond® 791, run it through the hose and nozzle, repeat, then flush the cleaner out fully before restarting with PUR.

What is a low monomer (MR) PUR hot melt?

An MR grade has a reduced free monomer content. Jowatherm-Reaktant® MR 607.90’s safety data sheet lists MDI below 0.1%, so it does not carry the hazard pictograms of standard PUR grades.

What is the difference between filled and unfilled PUR glue?

Filled grades contain fillers that add body and colour. Unfilled grades are clear or translucent and can be run thinner for near-invisible joints on gloss and dark decors.

How should PUR hot melt be stored?

Keep it sealed in its original moisture-proof packaging in a cool, dry place. Aro-Bond® 737 has a 12-month storage life at 5–30°C.
