So, what do you do?
If you want a perfect join in artificial grass (no gaps, straight edges, and a seam your customer can’t spot), the fastest and most consistent method is using the SMG tool set designed specifically for clean overlaps and accurate cuts.
Before you use the SMG Artificial Grass Length Knife for the first time, there are a few key tips that will help you get the most out of this time- and cost-saving kit. Follow the steps below and you’ll be able to achieve a perfect join in artificial grass far more reliably.
Tools you’ll need for a perfect join in artificial grass
SMG ARTIFICIAL GRASS LENGTH KNIFE
Speed. Precision. Safety. A must-have piece of kit for any artificial grass installer. The SMG Artificial Grass Length Knife can be used to cut incredibly straight lines very quickly on overlapping joints.

SMG ARTIFICIAL GRASS SPEED KNIFE EDGE TRIMMER
This SMG Artificial Grass Speed Knife Edge Trimmer is designed for cutting artificial grass quickly, accurately and efficiently — ideal for preparing a clean edge before you match the adjacent roll.

SMG ARTIFICIAL GRASS SEAMFIX
The SMG Artificial Grass Seamfix has two purposes: splitting the grass fibres out of the adhesive and adding pressure to the joint so you get maximum bond strength.

How to create a perfect join in artificial grass (step-by-step)
If you’re aiming for a high-quality join with straight edges and no visible gaps, this 3-step method is the most reliable approach.
Step 1: Create the first perfectly straight cut
The first step is the most important. Use the SMG Speed Knife Edge Trimmer to create a clean, straight edge quickly and consistently.
- It can cut from the top or bottom, but it’s recommended to fold the grass over first.
- Line up the nose of the tool and use the grass seam as your guide.
- The forward cutting motion and triangular shape helps maintain precision even at speed.
Step 2: Match the adjacent roll with an equally straight cut
Now make sure the edge on the adjacent roll is just as straight — this is where the SMG Length Knife shines for a perfect join in artificial grass.
- Overlap the second roll on top of the pre-cut roll.
- Slot the pre-cut edge of the first roll into the insert on the Length Knife (this becomes your straight guide).
- Lay the roll to be cut on top of the Length Knife starting at the tip.
- Cut through the second roll using the straight edge as the guide so both sides fold in precisely.
Step 3: Lock in the join (clean fibres + apply pressure)
The final step is ensuring a strong bond between the grass and the seam tape (or substrate). The SMG Seamfix pulls stray fibres out of the adhesive while applying consistent pressure along the joint.
- Coat the front nose of the Seamfix in anti-stick to prevent adhesive build-up.
- Tuck the nose underneath the join.
- Keep the flat bar on top of the grass to apply pressure as you move along the seam.
- Push the Seamfix all the way down the join, maintaining steady pressure.
Pro tips
- Take extra time on the first cut — it determines the quality of the entire seam.
- Keep overlap controlled so the Length Knife guide stays accurate.
- Apply consistent pressure during bonding for the cleanest finish.
