Adhesive for Curved Wood Veneer
Choosing the right adhesive for curved wood veneer is critical because curved panels naturally try to return to their original flat shape. The adhesive needs to suit the veneer, core material, pressing method and production environment.
Best general choice
UF resin is usually the preferred adhesive for curved veneer work because it creates a rigid bond that helps resist spring-back.
Other suitable options
PVA and contact adhesives can also work, depending on the panel shape, application method, production volume and whether the work is done in a press or on site.
Bonding Wood Veneer to Curved Surfaces
Architects and designers are increasingly specifying furniture, reception desks, kitchens, curved panels and curved doors. These curved designs can look excellent, but they create a practical bonding challenge: the veneer or laminate must be bonded securely to the core while the curved shape is held in place.
Curved doors and panels can be made from thin plywood laminations or flexible plywood designed for this application. The laminate or veneer is then bonded to the face of the panel while the adhesive cures.
Common holding methods include vacuum bag pressing, male/female former jigs, and direct laminating with a pressure roller when using contact adhesive.
Which Adhesives Work for Curved Veneer?
The most common adhesives used for curved veneer and curved laminations are UF resin, PVA adhesive and contact adhesive. Each can work in the right situation, but each has different strengths and limitations.

UF resin
Best for rigid curved laminations where spring-back resistance is important.
Alternative
PVA adhesive
Easier to use, but more flexible. Best where high creep resistance and full cure time are managed correctly.
Site Work
Contact adhesive
Useful for large furniture, site work and projects where press curing is not practical.
UF Resins for Curved Bonding
Our preferred recommendation for curved veneer bonding is usually UF resin, also known as urea formaldehyde resin. UF resin provides a strong, rigid and brittle bond, which helps stop the lamination from trying to bend back to its original flat shape.
PVA adhesives tend to be more flexible, which can allow more movement. For curved veneer, that flexibility can be a disadvantage when the panel is under tension.

UF resin systems are typically applied with a roller and then allowed to cure while the lamination is held in place.
Pressing Methods for Curved Veneer
Vacuum bag press
The lamination is positioned around a former, placed into a large plastic bag, and the air is removed with a vacuum pump. This tightens the lamination around the former while the adhesive cures.
Male/female jig
A matching jig system can be manufactured so the lamination is formed and held in shape while the adhesive cures.
Pressure roller
When using contact adhesive, the laminate can be bonded directly to the core and consolidated with a pressure roller to strengthen the bond.
PVA Adhesives for Curved Bonding
PVA is not normally our first choice for laminating and bonding curved doors or panels because PVA adhesives tend to be more flexible than UF resins. This flexibility can allow movement in curved work.
However, PVA can be suitable in some applications because it is easier to use. When using PVA for curved veneer, allow the bond to fully cure and choose a PVA adhesive with good creep resistance.

Contact Adhesives for Curved Veneer Work
Not every curved panel bonding application suits UF resin or PVA. Contact adhesive can be useful when the lamination needs to be bonded on site, on a large piece of furniture, or in a situation where press curing is not practical.
Hand applied
