Construction Adhesive: How to Choose a Strong, Fast-Grab Adhesive for Panels, Floors and Fixings

A practical guide to choosing construction adhesive for wall panels, acoustic panels, cladding, trims and chipboard flooring, with the right Ureka product for each job.

Revison Date: September 2026

The best construction adhesive for most trade and site work is a one-part MS or hybrid polymer adhesive, such as Aro-Seal 1155, because it grabs quickly, bonds almost every building material, works on damp surfaces and stays flexible for years. Where the job is chipboard flooring, solvent-sensitive boards or hygienic wall cladding, a more specialised adhesive will give a better result, and this guide explains exactly when to switch.

Ureka Global supplies construction adhesives to fit-out contractors, joiners, shopfitters, flooring installers, panel manufacturers and modular builders across the UK. Below you will find a quick answer, a plain-English explanation of the main adhesive types, the risks of getting it wrong and practical advice on application, coverage and curing.

Quick Answer

For general bonding of panels, skirting, trims, boards and fixings, choose a high-grab MS polymer construction adhesive such as Aro-Seal 1155 or Soudal Grip All High Strength. For large-area wall cladding use a sachet-fed surface bonding adhesive like Cladstikk 11 or Cladstikk 12. For chipboard flooring and timber-to-timber structural joints, a D4 polyurethane gel such as Aro-Bond 930 is the better choice.

What Is Construction Adhesive?

A construction adhesive is a thick, gap-filling adhesive, usually supplied in a 290ml or 310ml cartridge or a 600ml sachet, that bonds building materials to each other without (or alongside) screws, nails and plugs. It is designed to cope with real site conditions: uneven substrates, dust, damp, temperature changes and structures that move slightly over time.

Most modern construction adhesive products are “adhesive sealants”, meaning the same bead can bond and seal. That is why you will see MS polymer products described as both an adhesive and a sealant on their data sheets.

Common materials bonded

  • Timber, MDF, plywood, OSB and chipboard
  • Plasterboard, cement particle board and tile backer boards
  • Concrete, brick, block and natural or artificial stone
  • Metals such as aluminium, steel and galvanised sheet
  • Plastics including PVC and GRP (always test PE and PP, which are hard to bond)
  • Glass, mirror and ceramic (check the product is mirror-safe first)

Typical applications

  • Wall panels, decorative panelling and acoustic panels
  • Skirting, architrave, coving, window boards and trims
  • Hygienic PVC and GRP wall cladding
  • Chipboard flooring, stair treads and subfloor boards
  • Thresholds, sills, signage and fixtures
  • Modular building, bathroom pods and off-site panel assembly

Main types of construction adhesive

MS and hybrid polymer adhesives are solvent-free, isocyanate-free, bond almost everything and stay elastic. Solvent-based grab adhesives (often SBR) grab and cure quickly but smell strongly and can go brittle over time. Water-based acrylic grab adhesives offer high grab on porous surfaces but cure slowly in the cold and struggle on non-porous materials. Polyurethane gels give very strong, water-resistant bonds on timber and chipboard. For more background on the first three, see our guide to the best grab adhesives.

Why Adhesive Choice Matters

A cartridge of construction adhesive is a small part of the cost of a job, but the wrong choice can lead to call-backs, damaged finishes and in the worst case panels coming off the wall. The most common risks are:

  • Delamination: brittle solvent-based adhesives can crack as buildings move and heat up, leaving panels loose months later.
  • Moisture ingress: in bathrooms, kitchens, plant rooms and exterior areas, a non water-resistant adhesive can soften or lose adhesion.
  • Weak bonds on non-porous surfaces: water-based adhesives need at least one porous surface to dry; on metal, PVC or glass they may never fully cure.
  • Slow curing: in a cold building, some adhesives stay soft for days, slowing trades that follow.
  • Panel slip and sag: low-grab adhesives let heavy panels slide down the wall unless they are propped.
  • Poor finish: solvents can attack polystyrene, stain natural stone or show through thin materials.
  • Rework and waste: removing failed panels and cured adhesive takes far longer than choosing the right product first time.

Best Construction Adhesive for Panels, Trims and General Building Work

For most site and workshop bonding, Aro-Seal 1155 MS Polymer Adhesive is our first recommendation. It is a fast-curing, one-component, solvent and water-free elastic construction adhesive that bonds concrete, brick, wood, natural or artificial stone, ceramics, glass, metals and most plastics.

From the technical data sheet, Aro-Seal 1155 forms a skin in about 8 minutes (20°C, 65% RH), cures at roughly 2mm per 60 minutes, has a temperature resistance of -40°C to +90°C, a tensile strength of 4 N/mm² and elongation above 250%. It can be applied to damp surfaces, is over-paintable with water-based paints and is supplied in 290ml cartridges in black or white.

Choose it when: you need one construction adhesive in the van that handles most substrates, you are working inside and outside, or you are bonding a mix of porous and non-porous materials.

Instant grab adhesive for heavy items

If you need an instant grab adhesive to hold heavier items such as window boards, thresholds or stone sills with minimal propping, Soudal Grip All High Strength is a flexible hybrid polymer grab adhesive. Its data sheet lists a skin time of around 16 minutes, curing at 2 to 3mm per 24 hours, more than 400% elongation, -40°C to +90°C temperature resistance and good adhesion even to slightly moist surfaces. It is not suitable for natural stone, so choose another product for marble or granite.

Best adhesive for wall panels and acoustic panels

The best adhesive for wall panels depends on the panel. For decorative MDF and timber panelling, Aro-Seal 1155 or Grip All work well. For acoustic wall and ceiling panels, where you often want a wider bonded area and a thinner glue line, Aro-Seal 1101 combines high grab with a lower viscosity, so it is easier to extrude in several beads. Read how we solved bonding acoustic panels to ceilings on site, and for Autex products see our Autex acoustic panel install guide.

For PVC and GRP hygienic wall cladding, use a dedicated cladding construction adhesive. Cladstikk 30 is supplied in cartridges, while Cladstikk 11 (600ml sachet, up to 1.2 m²) and Cladstikk 12 are surface bonding systems for larger areas. Our guide to bonding PVC hygienic wall cladding explains the method in detail, and you can browse the full wall cladding adhesive range.

Chipboard flooring glue

Chipboard flooring glue needs to be water resistant and strong in the tongue and groove joints and on the joists. Aro-Bond 930 PU Adhesive is a solvent-free, non-flammable polyurethane gel that is fully waterproof to EN 204 D4, adheres well to chipboard and timber and foams slightly to fill small gaps. It skins in about 30 minutes, is handleable in around 60 minutes and reaches final strength in 12 hours. Woodstikk PU Gel D4 is a similar option. At least one surface must be porous and the joint should be held under pressure while it cures.

How to Choose the Right Adhesive

No single construction adhesive is right for every job. Work through these questions before you choose:

  • Substrates: are both surfaces porous (timber, plaster, masonry), or is one non-porous (metal, PVC, glass)? Non-porous pairs need a moisture-curing MS, hybrid or PU adhesive.
  • Site or factory: on-site work favours cartridge products with high grab and damp tolerance; off-site and factory work may justify sachets, pneumatic guns or bulk packs.
  • Water resistance: wet areas, exterior work and flooring need a water-resistant or D4 rated adhesive.
  • Cure speed: fast skinning helps productivity but reduces the time you have to position the item.
  • Bond strength and flexibility: structures that move, vibrate or change temperature need an elastic adhesive rather than a rigid one.
  • Solvent sensitivity: polystyrene, some foams and some plastics need a solvent-free product.
  • Fire performance: fire-rated door and panel work may call for a fire retardant adhesive such as Aro-Seal 1107 FR. Always check the certification needed for your system.
  • Equipment: a heavy-duty cartridge gun, a sachet gun or a battery applicator makes a big difference to speed and fatigue on larger jobs.
Adhesive type Grab Substrates Water resistance Best application
MS / hybrid polymer High Almost all building materials, porous and non-porous Very good, damp-tolerant General construction, panels, trims, cladding
Solvent-based SBR grab Very high Mostly porous; attacks polystyrene Moderate Fast interior fixing where odour is acceptable
Water-based acrylic grab High At least one porous surface Limited until fully cured Interior trims, coving, polystyrene
Polyurethane gel (D4) Low to medium, needs clamping Timber, chipboard, masonry, insulation Excellent (EN 204 D4) Chipboard flooring, timber joints, sandwich panels

Which Ureka Adhesive Should You Choose?

Choose Aro-Seal 1155 if you want one fast-curing, all-round construction adhesive for panels, trims, metals, stone and plastics, inside or outside.

Choose Soudal Grip All High Strength if you need a strong instant grab adhesive for heavier items with minimal propping, and the substrate is not natural stone.

Choose Aro-Seal 1101 if you are bonding acoustic panels or larger areas and want an easier-to-extrude adhesive that also seals joints with up to 25% movement.

Choose Cladstikk 30, Cladstikk 11 or Cladstikk 12 if you are installing PVC or GRP hygienic wall cladding.

Choose Aro-Bond 930 if you need chipboard flooring glue or a D4 water-resistant bond on timber and can clamp or weight the joint.

Choose Soudal Grip All Solvent Free if you are bonding polystyrene or other solvent-sensitive materials to porous surfaces. It is sometimes out of stock, so call us for lead times.

Choose Aro-Seal 1107 FR if the project calls for a fire retardant hybrid polymer adhesive sealant.

Common Problems and Best Fixes

Panels slide down the wall before the adhesive sets

Low-grab adhesives, too few beads or very heavy panels all lead to slip. Temporary support may still be needed on tall or heavy panels, whichever construction adhesive you use.

Best fix: a high-grab MS polymer such as Aro-Seal 1155 or Soudal Grip All High Strength, applied in vertical beads, with temporary props for the first hours.

Construction adhesive stays soft and never fully cures

Water-based adhesives between two non-porous surfaces, or any adhesive in a very cold, dry building, can stay soft for days.

Best fix: switch to a moisture-curing MS or hybrid polymer construction adhesive and keep the area above the minimum application temperature.

Bond fails on metal, PVC or coated surfaces

Release agents, oils and plasticisers on the surface stop the adhesive wetting out properly.

Best fix: clean and activate with Formoa SA Surface Activator, then bond with Aro-Seal 1155 or Cladstikk 30.

Adhesive has melted polystyrene or insulation

Solvent-based grab adhesives attack polystyrene and some foams.

Best fix: a solvent-free adhesive such as Soudal Grip All Solvent Free or an MS polymer. See our polystyrene adhesive range.

Squeaking or loose chipboard floors

Dry-laid or poorly glued joints move and rub as people walk across the floor.

Best fix: glue every tongue and groove and the joists with Aro-Bond 930 D4 PU gel, then screw down while the adhesive cures.

Cracked or brittle glue line after a few months

Older solvent-based adhesives lose flexibility as the solvent leaves and the building moves.

Best fix: an elastic MS or hybrid polymer adhesive such as Aro-Seal 1101 or Grip All High Strength.

Slow progress on large cladding areas

Hand-gunning hundreds of cartridges is slow and tiring on big wall cladding and flooring jobs.

Best fix: sachet adhesives with a Cox Powerflow Combi applicator or the battery-powered Multiiiibead application system.

Best Practice: 7 Proven Tips for Using Construction Adhesive

  1. Prepare the surfaces. Make sure both surfaces are clean, sound and free from dust, grease and loose material. Degrease metals and plastics and remove release agents.
  2. Check the temperature. Aro-Seal 1155 can be applied from 1°C to 30°C and Grip All High Strength from 5°C to 35°C. Cold slows curing on every product.
  3. Use the right bead pattern. Apply vertical beads or dabs about every 15cm on panels, and always include the edges and corners. Vertical beads let air and moisture reach the adhesive so it cures evenly.
  4. Get the coverage right. Do not starve the joint. For large surfaces, surface bonding adhesives like Cladstikk 11 state their coverage (up to 1.2 m² per 600ml sachet).
  5. Apply pressure. Press the item firmly into place so the adhesive wets out both surfaces, tap down with a rubber mallet and prop or clamp where needed.
  6. Respect the cure time. Moisture-curing adhesives cure from the outside in, typically 2 to 3mm per 24 hours for hybrid polymers. Do not load the joint until it has had time to cure.
  7. Store and test properly. Keep cartridges between 5°C and 25°C, protect from frost and always carry out a small adhesion test on new or unusual substrates before starting the full job.

FAQs

What is the strongest construction adhesive?

For most building materials, a high-strength MS or hybrid polymer such as Aro-Seal 1155 (4 N/mm² tensile strength) or Soudal Grip All High Strength gives the best combination of strength and flexibility. For structural timber joints, a D4 polyurethane gel such as Aro-Bond 930 is very strong.

Is construction adhesive waterproof?

MS and hybrid polymer construction adhesive products are highly water resistant once cured, and many can be applied to damp surfaces. Aro-Bond 930 PU gel is waterproof to EN 204 D4. Water-based acrylic grab adhesives are less water resistant.

What is the difference between grab adhesive and construction adhesive?

Grab adhesive is a type of construction adhesive with very high initial tack, so the item holds in place almost immediately. “Construction adhesive” is the wider term for all gap-filling adhesives used to bond building materials.

What is the best adhesive for wall panels?

For MDF, timber and decorative panels, a high-grab MS polymer such as Aro-Seal 1155 works well. For acoustic panels, Aro-Seal 1101 is easier to extrude in multiple beads, and for PVC or GRP cladding use Cladstikk 30, 11 or 12.

What glue should I use for chipboard flooring?

Use a water-resistant D4 polyurethane gel such as Aro-Bond 930 or Woodstikk PU Gel D4 in the tongue and groove joints and on the joists, then screw the boards down while it cures.

How long does construction adhesive take to cure?

Aro-Seal 1155 skins in around 8 minutes and cures at roughly 2mm per hour, while Grip All High Strength cures at 2 to 3mm per 24 hours. Full strength depends on bead size, temperature and humidity.

Can construction adhesive replace screws and nails?

In many non-structural applications, such as panels, skirting and trims, yes. For structural or safety-critical fixings, follow the design specification and use mechanical fixings where required.

Can I use construction adhesive on polystyrene?

Only use a solvent-free product. Solvent-based grab adhesives will melt polystyrene. Soudal Grip All Solvent Free and MS polymer adhesives are suitable, but always test first.

Can I paint over construction adhesive?

Aro-Seal 1155, Cladstikk 30 and Grip All High Strength can be over-painted with water-based paints once cured. Test solvent-based paints first.

What gun do I need for construction adhesive?

A heavy-duty cartridge gun such as the Cox Easiflow HD handles thick, high-grab adhesives. For sachets use the Cox Powerflow Combi, and for large cladding or flooring jobs consider the battery-powered Multiiiibead system.
